Compost is the foundation of organic gardening. Build up the soil with beautiful, humus rich compost created by you on your own patch and you will be rewarded by easier weed management and healthy plants, better able to resist disease.

How not to fail
Composting is a natural process but it takes humans to do it, say Keith and Midori on Journey to Forever, by Handmade Projects.

On their website they tell you how to make compost and how not to fail. They cover vermicomposting, composting indoors and composting for small farms.

Not just about compost, this is an information rich website written by journalists who see the true destination of their journey as putting an end to the poverty and hardship that afflict billions of people in a world of plenty.

And not just a website, Journey to Forever is a pioneering overland expedition by a small, mobile NGO (Non-Government Organization) involved in environment and rural development work, starting from Hong Kong and travelling 40,000 kilometres through 26 countries in Asia and Africa to Cape Town, South Africa.

"The way we humans are behaving these days you'd think you can buy new planets by the dozen in the local supermarket. The deserts are spreading, the forests are shrinking, the climate is changing, the water's drying up, whole species vanish for good by the minute, pollution is literally everywhere, there's even a hole in the sky, and never before have so many people been so poor and so few people been so rich."

Organic gardening, farming and consequently composting is seen as part of the solution. Handmade Projects is a volunteer effort so while you're there, make a donation if you can.

An Indepth Look
Why make compost? Why not just throw your waste on the garden and let the worms go to work? There's a good reason and it's explained here in this composting manual on Jim and Therese Fish's Rancho Mondo website. These pages provide a indepth look at the composting experience with a bit of science thrown in.
