Dr Jonathan (Jon) Tanner, former International Director at the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology, is the new chief executive officer of Organics Aotearoa New Zealand (OANZ).
OANZ chair , Doug Voss, says Dr Tanner will bring experience in research, international trade and rural development to the role, which involves providing coordination, leadership and strategy for the organic sector.
Europe, Asia and Africa
“Dr Tanner has significant experience in the European, Asian and African food and agricultural sectors, and has worked with the Environment Agency Wales, UK Department for International Development and International Livestock Centre for Africa”, Mr Voss said.
“As International Director at the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology, Dr Tanner has worked at a senior level with government departments, researchers and primary industry groups.
Family organic farm
“Having managed the production and direct marketing of certified organic lamb on his family’s organic farm in Wales, Dr Tanner has long held an interest in the organic sector, completing his PhD on increasing the potential for small scale organic farming systems in South East Asia.
“Organic production is now worth more than $330 million a year to New Zealand’s economy. Dr Tanner brings skills and experience that OANZ needs to keep growing the organic sector towards our goal of reaching $1 billion value by 2013”, Mr Voss said.
