Hi, my name is Caroline. My partner and I are extremely keen to buy a
few acres north of Auckland and grow selected varieties of organic fruit
and produce. We would like to know "what are the pre-requisites and
procedure for obtaining organic certification for sale on the domestic
market?"
We look forward to your reply and thank you in anticipation.
Caroline
The new domestic scheme is called PODS (Producers ORganic Domestic Scheme).
It is mainly based on the BioGro standards.
Because it is for the domestic market, some of the more extensive and
expensive documentation for export doesn't need to get done. Auditing is
mainly done in grower cluster groups with considerable peer
moderation/auditing. Contact
Matt Morris for more info.
Otherwise there are still BioGro, Demeter and Certenz.
Looking at purchasing land for certified organic production, it is always a
good idea to look for as uncontaminated land as possible as weel as
uncontaminated water supplies.
A history of DDT, Lead, Copper, Arsenic use (from years of intensive fruit
growing for example) can haunt a property for a long time.
