I am trying to slowly get rid of using chemicals and using more "user friendly" insecticides and fungacides. I use a Garlic & Pyrethrum spray and a soft soap to control whitefly, thrips and other pests on my hydroponic courgettes. I read in one of your previous answers (THRIPS: November 1999) that Pyrethrum can still be harmful and that protective clothing should be worn. I use my garlic and pyrethrum spray without any protective gear at all, including no gloves. Should I be more careful?
Pyrethum is toxic and although its toxicity to mammals is very low, care needs to be taken. If possible use gloves and at least a dust mask and maybe put on a washable hat (wash it afterwards) not only while spraying but also for mixing. Avoid windy conditions, spray in the evening to avoid contaminating bees and rapid breakdown of active ingredients in sunlight.
