I am looking for an effective organic method to remove and control gorse from approx. 20 acres of land other than overplanting with trees. Are there organic sprays, or non toxic measures for clearing out gorse and returning the 20 acres (hillside) to grass/pasture in a reasonably short time frame - say 0-2 years or 2-5 years?
We haven't found a magic organic method yet other than cutting and slashing. To my knowledge there aren't any good organic sprays to help. Conventional herbicides can be painted onto the stumps after cutting, so at least spreading of pesticide residues is limited.
Reader feedback: To do it quickly, hire a digger to dig the gorse up. It might be cheaper for you to buy a small digger and do it yourself. To do it cheaply, buy a herd of goats (50-70) and let them ring bark the gorse, which will die slowly. Adding large quantity of lime to bring the soil to balance also eliminate gorse over time according to Ewan Campbell, founder of Probitas, a certified organic fertilizer - Juliana.
