I grow Macadamia Nuts in Bay of Plenty area. Can you tell me if Neem
Oil is successful in dealing with green shield bugs? Is there a remedy
that will kill them. Not sure if we can go organic because of this
problem. How do others deal with it? They are our only real problem
and do not want to use chemicals anymore.
Neem oil can be effective on green shield bugs. However, apparently efficacy
depends considerably on the formulation. There are various products on the
market. Some of them are not BIOGRO/DEMETER approved or only allowed for
Pyrethrum should be affective against green shield bug, but again, if going
for certification watch which product is being used, some are prohibited
others are restricted.
The overall environment should be fostering natural enemies of the pests,
e.g. diverse shelter, abundance of flowering plants throughout the seasons
especially Apiaceae [Parsley/Carrot family] and Phacelia/Buckwheat strips.
Contact the BIOGRO office at Wellington, email@example.com or 04 801 9741, for contacts of other organic
Macadamia growers and ask for advice.
