We are thinking of growing YAMS. We live in the deep south and the property is very peaty any guidance on this subject would be much appreciated, also any ideas on the proper name of PUHA which I guess is some sort of thistle.

Yams prefer a warm, free draining soil. They are susceptible to grass grub damage. They need as long as possible growing season. Late and early frosts will severely limit yields and tuber size.
Puha is usually the common sow thistle (souclius oleraceus). However, there are other plants in the same family that Maori refer to as Puha.
