Growing on compost pile
Is it advisable to develop a compost pile on a vacant vege patch and then once pile has composted, sow or plant directly on this?
It depends on how nutritionally rich the compost was and how much leaching has occurred. It would still be good to aerate the soil and rather than sowing seed maybe try transplanting seedlings. Select mainly heavy feeding crops such as corn, Brassicas, celery, pumpkin and potatoes. Watch for too much Nitrogen in the plants: an almost dark blue/green appearance in the foliage. This will weaken plants and make them more susceptible to diseases. Extreme amounts of nutrients will even burn seedlings and seed.
