Composting Aids
What do you think about using commercial products to speed up composting? Are they necessary? Are they effective? Someone mentioned to me a product now available in NZ you could add to your kitchen compost container which would help the waste to break down rapidly, with little odour.

A little bit of animal manure (cow, sheep, chicken, horse…) or a shovel full of old compost will do the trick as well.

A well built compost of minimum size (1 cubic metre) and sufficient moisture will heat up within three days.

Biodynamic preparations are a different story. They balance the decomposition process and the final product, therefore are quite useful.

The Christchurch City Council promotes a product containing effective micro-organisms to add to kitchen waste. This helps ferment the kitchen scraps so no offensive smell and attraction to flies develops. They still need to be buried in the soil to break down.
