Raised beds - inexpensive methods...
Hello, I have an small organic market garden in the Waikato. I am wanting to create raised beds but can not find a cheap method to do so. (timber is too expensive) can you suggest a practical alternative for an area of around 1 acre?
Mark out one metre wide sections with string. Shovel the soil outside the lines into the marked out beds. These can later be pathways. After raking and letting the soil settle, the raised beds should be about 15-20cm high. Add compost and mulch as available.
Alternatives to lining the beds with timber:
- Corrugated iron would be a relatively cheap option
- builders salvage yards are a good source of cheap recycled materials - bricks, stones, concrete blocks, timber, ironů
- Old railways sleepers? - try New Zealand Railways
- collect your own stones or rocks - could be labour intensive!
Readers suggestions for alternatives to timber welcome! Send them to email@example.com. Put Suggestions for Raised Beds in the subject line.
