 Back to the questions . . .
Brown beetle defoliating vineyard I have a small vineyard in Banks Peninsula, Canterbury. For the last two
years we have been fighting grass grub, or more to the point brown
beetle. During Oct-Nov each year they defoliate the vineyard almost over
night. Other vineyards around the area also experience the same problem, and
blanket spray insecticide when the beetles are flying. Last year we applied
Pyrethrum but to no benefit, any suggestions?
Use a commercially available biological control, in February/March to affect the larvae in the soil. Use Pyrethrum in the evening just before beetles come out. We use a commercially available garlic-pyrethrum to good results.
