 Back to the questions . . .
Grass as mulch Regarding the practice of mowing between rows of fruit trees, this knocks the broadleaf and other 'weeds', and we end up with a predominantly grass/clover sward. Is it OK to mow this grass and use it as a heavy mulch around the trees for weed control and moisture retention? I've read that grass leaves release a poisonous substance into the ground with rain, which suppresses the growth of the plant beneath which the grass is growing. Does this apply just to live grass or dry grass/mulch as well?
Andrew
We have used grass clippings as a mulch treatment in a trial growing lettuces. The grass mulch produced better lettuces than the straw and seaweed mulch! We think your idea is excellent!
